Verbs are tricky because they need to be conjugated. Depending on the language, this can be a simple task or a convoluted nightmare. Tamil conjugates verbs according to person type (e.g. first, second or third person), number (e.g. single or plural), and gender (e.g. he, she, neuter).

To conjugate verbs in Tamil, you will need to know the verb suffixes that correspond to the appropriate category combination (e.g. person, number, gender) and verb tense (e.g. past, present, future).

I’ve created a starter chart with some common verbs and their Tamil conjugations. The Tamil Verb Charts I make for this site will show the roots for the past, present and future verb tenses. These are the roots of the verb tenses without the verb suffixes. To conjugate the verb, combine the verb tense root with the appropriate suffix (please refer to Verb Suffixes page for more information).

For example, to conjugate ” listen” into the present tense, first person singular, locate the root and combine it with its singular suffix:

கேட்கிற் (present, “listen”) + ஏன் (first person suffix) = கேட்கிறேன் (“I listen”)
